One Parish One Prisoner (OPOP) is a project of Underground Ministries, a nonprofit based in Skagit County. With the knowledge that there are about as many churches as there are prisoners in Washington state, OPOP pairs incarcerated people with churches in the communities they are preparing to re-enter.
Inspired by the story of Lazarus as told in the Gospel of John, OPOP organizes parishioners into resurrection communities - teams focused on helping just one neighbor leave the modern-day tombs of mass incarceration. Over a two-year period, these teams build a relationship with a friend who is still in prison, then walk with that friend through their re-entry journey. This is a process of mutual transformation: OPOP seeks not only to heal the wounds of incarceration but also to strengthen the discipleship of congregations large and small.
OPOP teams have launched at over 70 parishes in Washington so far, and the program has grown to include communities in Chicago and Central Texas.

Faith Lutheran Church’s OPOP ministry team launched in December of 2024 and consists of 10 members of the congregation. The team meets once a month to discuss OPOP’s series of learning modules. These learning materials are printed out and mailed to our incarcerated friend along with letters from each team member. Modules include discussions on things like prayer, mental health, and addiction while also addressing more practical aspects of building a re-entry plan.
